WHO ARE WE

Established in the early 1900s by Lim Thiam Kwee, Hup Ann Travel has been servicing the Singaporean community as a travel agent for more than 3 decades. Beginning primarily as a remittance service for Chinese immigrants, Hup Ann transitioned officially into a private company and licensed Singapore Travel Agency in 1986.

Initially, the company provided licensed remittance services for Chinese immigrants in Singapore, assisting them to send money, garments/apparel and food back to their families in China – these immigrants hailed primarily from the Hokkien Province in China, also known as Fujian. After the Japanese occupation, the business was disrupted by the war and Tan Chin Cheong restarted the operations of the Hup Ann remittance business. Then there were also restrictions regarding traveling to and from China after 1949. Hup Ann carried out the business of assisting people who travelled between Singapore and China. Tan also continued the remittance service, and as he hailed from Zhao An, a municipal region of the Hokkien Province, the clientele consisted primarily of Zhao An residents.

1986 marks the beginning of Hup Ann transforming into a private limited company – having its grand opening on 4 July 1987 and moved into new premises with a clear step towards a modern travel business. As technology advanced in the financial sector, the remittance business became less effective, and with the relaxed conditions for international travel of PRCs, the remittance business was gradually phased out and replaced by focusing on travel business. New international destinations are added, apart from strengthening the travel to various China attractions. From the humble beginnings of this simple remittance service, Hup Ann has grown into the full-fledged travel business that it is today.
